Peter Gift

Peter Gift has been part of Aarhus’ culture and gastronomy for more than a century. The story began as a wine shop, and in 1906 Lauritz Hansen was granted a liquor license. In 1912, his son, Lauritz Peter Hansen, took over the helm and turned the place into a popular tavern. He ran it until his death in 1965. For a short period the doors were closed, but in 1967 it reopened under the name Peter Gift, which was already the name everyone used colloquially. With the reopening came a new dimension, as they started serving food to go with the drinks that guests could order.

Today, Casper Skov is in charge. He has renovated and modernized without removing what makes Peter Gift special. The kitchen has been expanded and the food is still a big draw. The lunch menu offers classic Danish dishes that appeal to regulars and new visitors alike, and the famous Saturday lunch is particularly popular. It’s no longer a place where you can expect to get a table without booking, as demand is high.

The interior is full of atmosphere. The wood paneling, solid tables and green carpets create a warm and rustic setting for your visit. A fireplace crackles on cold days and adds another layer of coziness. When the weather is nice, the beautiful courtyard opens up like a green breathing space in the middle of the city. Local classics such as Ceres Top and Aarhus Bryghus are on tap, but a host of international breweries have also found their way to the bar.
