Boulevard Caféen
A piece of Aarhus pub history
Located on the corner of Odensegade and Ingerslevs Boulevard, Boulevard Caféen was for many years one of Aarhus’ best known and loved brown pubs. The building, which dates back to 1910, has been a pub since 1944 and was popularly known as ‘Bulle’. It was a gathering point for both regulars from the neighborhood and AGF fans who met here before the matches.
Inside, guests were greeted by a classic decor with wood paneling, slot machines and high bar stools by the windows. Behind the bar, cold draft and bottled beers were available, with Ceres Top, Tuborg, Carlsberg and Limfjordsporter among the regular choices, complemented by draft beers like Odense Classic and Albani IPA. A special signature was the popular bulle jug, a colorful mix of vodka, gin, tequila and juice that was a fixture in many guests’ evenings.
In 1998, Jan Rasmussen, known as “Bullefar”, took over after many years as a bartender. He became synonymous with Boulevard Caféen and helped build the warm, down-to-earth atmosphere the place was known for. After his death in January 2023, his wife, Anne Marie Brund, known as “Bullemor”, continued the business. She kept the spirit of the place alive and ensured that guests could continue to experience the informal coziness and community that made it special.
In December 2024, on her 72nd birthday, Anne Marie chose to close Boulevard Caféen. Ten days later she passed away, and with her, an important era in the city’s pub life came to an end. Although the doors are now closed, the memories live on for the many people who have enjoyed a beer, shared a pint and a chat at the bar over the years. The Boulevard Café will forever stand as a symbol of the classic Aarhus bodega culture, where socializing and local unity were more important than anything else.
