The Circus Tavern
Cirkuskroen is located at Skovvejen 23, close to both Aarhus Harbor and the city center. The place was named in 1960 by Oda Pfänner of the famous Miehe circus family, who wanted to preserve some of the circus magic in the area. It wasn’t just a name, but also a promise of an experience filled with color, joy and a bit of wry humor.
When you enter, you’re greeted by a universe where clown figures, old circus posters and historical programs from the Miehe family era fill both walls and ceilings. The tables are decorated with small plants in ceramic pots, often with clown motifs, and the whole room exudes nostalgia. Here’s a decor that makes guests smile and feel like they’re entering a time warp where entertainment and personality go hand in hand.
The bar is the inn’s natural gathering point and offers a selection of draft and bottled beers, including Ceres, Tuborg and Carlsberg. For those who want something other than beer, there are classic drinks like gin and tonic or rum and coke. One of the tavern’s signatures is the so-called Circus Set, which consists of a beer and a Møffe, a spicy bitter that fits perfectly with the informal atmosphere.
Smoking is allowed at Cirkuskroen, which adds to the authentic bodega experience. Music often comes from the jukebox and guests are quick to greet each other, whether you’re a regular or just visiting for the first time. Known for its warm atmosphere and the motto “the place where life is lived”, these are not just words on a wall, but a feeling you take with you when you leave.
Cirkuskroen is not a pub that tries to be something other than what it is. It is an institution in Aarhus where traditions are upheld and stories live on through both decor and guests. There’s room for laughter, good conversation and maybe a little clown trick or two if the mood strikes.
